Our Floors - Building 101

Hardwoods, one of our biggest but probably the easiest decision we made when building our home. We wanted something light, to hide dirt, dog hair scratches etc and somethings warm and timeless. Something you’d see in a European home from 100 years ago . White oak seemed like a natural choice.

We found our flooring from a mill in Ohio, Sheoga Hardwoods. We purchased the 7” solid white oak unfinished planks for the majority of our home, and the 5” unfinished planks for our primary bedroom. We choose solid hardwood, versus engineered hardwood, so they could be in our home forever. Our flooring installer was so impressed with the quality and said they could be refinished multiple times, and be in our home for a hundred years, this alone was worth the investment.

Our flooring was finished on site, and I have a detailed video of how they were finished here. They used three different epoxy colors to fill the knots, and holes which added so much character and variation. They then used the Bona Natural Topcoat to seal them. I believe they did multiple thin coats of this.

We love our flooring so much, the natural color of the white oak is so gorgeous. It is definitely something I would choose over and over again. Would you choose white oak flooring for your home?
